For more than 60 years, Andy Callif Bail Bonds has worked with people and families facing arrests, bail proceedings, and other unfamiliar parts of Ohio’s criminal justice system. These experiences have shown us how challenging it can be to make important decisions when legal processes and individual responsibilities aren’t fully understood.
The Know Your Rights: Understanding the Criminal Justice System Scholarship encourages students to examine why legal awareness matters and how access to reliable information can help people navigate difficult circumstances.
Andy Callif Bail Bonds will award $1,500 to a qualifying student pursuing higher education in the United States. Students from all areas of study are welcome to apply.
Who Is Eligible?
The Know Your Rights: Understanding the Criminal Justice System Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students who meet the following criteria:
- Enrollment status: You are enrolled in or accepted at an accredited college, trade school, university, or graduate school in the United States.
- Academic standing: You have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
- U.S. status: You are a U.S. citizen or are otherwise authorized to work or attend school in the United States.
- Scholarship terms: You agree to the scholarship Terms and Conditions.
- Essay requirement: You prepare an original 500 to 1,000-word essay addressing the scholarship topic below.
Students from any area of study may apply. There is no fee to submit an application.
How To Apply
Before applying, review the eligibility requirements and prepare your response to the scholarship essay prompt. Once your essay is ready, complete the application form on this page.
The application process requires the following:
- Application form: Provide your first and last name, mailing address, phone number, email address, school information, expected graduation date, and other requested information.
- Scholarship essay: Upload your completed essay as a PDF with a maximum file size of 3 MB.
- Unofficial transcript: Upload a PDF copy of your unofficial transcript to document your academic standing.
- Enrollment verification: Upload proof of acceptance or current enrollment at your college, university, trade school, or graduate program as a PDF.
- Authorization: Certify that the information in your application is true, complete, and correct.
- Electronic signature: Type your full name to sign and complete your application.
Applicants will also be asked how they learned about the scholarship. Please review your application and uploaded files carefully before submitting the form.
Scholarship Essay Topic
Applicants must submit an original essay of 500 to 1,000 words responding to the following prompt:
Why is it important for people to understand their legal rights and responsibilities when interacting with the criminal justice system? Discuss how greater legal awareness can help individuals make informed decisions during difficult circumstances.
You may explore subjects such as education, access to information, due process, legal representation, individual responsibilities, or other factors that affect a person’s ability to understand the justice system. You don’t need to study law or criminal justice to participate. We want to see a thoughtful perspective that responds directly to the question and communicates your ideas clearly.
For your essay to be eligible, please follow these guidelines:
- Original title: Give your essay a catchy, descriptive title that reflects your central idea.
- Bibliography: Identify all sources used in preparing your response, including books, websites, articles, reports, magazines, studies, or other materials.
- Citations: Properly cite quotations, statistics, research, and information drawn from outside sources.
- Document formatting: Use 12-point font, double spacing, and 1-inch margins.
- Originality: Write the essay in your own words and submit work created specifically for your application.
- File format: Save the final document as a PDF before uploading it.
Name your finished PDF using the scholarship name, year, and your name. For example:
“Know Your Rights Scholarship 2027 – Jane Smith.pdf”
Take time to proofread your work. The scholarship committee will focus on the ideas and reasoning expressed in your essay. Please prioritize clear, purposeful writing over complex legal terminology.
Scholarship Deadline
The deadline to apply for the Know Your Rights: Understanding the Criminal Justice System Scholarship is April 15, 2027.
Applications received after this date will not be considered. Following the deadline, the scholarship selection committee will begin its review. Depending on the number of submissions received, the process may take one to three months.
For administrative and legal reasons, we cannot accept calls, emails, or other communications concerning scholarship applications or provide individual status updates. The information necessary to participate is provided on this page and in the scholarship Terms and Conditions. If we need clarification or further information from an applicant, we will contact that person directly.
Terms and Conditions
Applicants must satisfy the eligibility requirements on this page and comply with the complete Terms and Conditions governing the scholarship.
The following additional conditions apply:
- Minimum age: Applicant must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment.
- U.S. residency: Applicant must reside in the United States.
- Personal information: Applicant must provide the identifying, contact, and academic information necessary to administer the scholarship.
- Applicant certification: All information and documentation supplied with the application must be accurate and complete.
The following individuals or submissions are not eligible:
- Employees and their children: Employees of Andy Callif Bail Bonds and children of employees may not apply.
- Past recipients: Previous recipients of the Know Your Rights: Understanding the Criminal Justice System Scholarship may not receive the award again.
- Interview participation: Applicants who are unable or unwilling to participate in an interview with an Andy Callif Bail Bonds representative if selected are ineligible.
- Duplicate work: Essays submitted for multiple scholarships or reused in multiple scholarship years are not eligible.
Submission of an application does not guarantee selection for an award.
Selection and Award Notification Process
A scholarship selection committee will evaluate eligible essays based on their responsiveness to the prompt, originality, depth of thought, organization, clarity of communication, and adherence to the essay guidelines.
Age, race, color, religion, sex, gender, national origin, familial status, disability, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law will have no influence on the committee’s decision.
Only the selected recipient will receive an award notification. The winner will be contacted by email and announced on the Andy Callif Bail Bonds blog and through a press release.
The $1,500 scholarship award will be sent directly to the recipient’s college, trade school, university, or graduate school. After selection, we will request the information needed to deliver the award and may ask for documentation necessary to confirm the recipient’s enrollment status and academic performance.
Privacy Statement
Personal information collected through the scholarship application will not be sold, given, or distributed to third parties for their independent use.
The selected recipient’s name and photograph may be used in communications related to the scholarship, including the Andy Callif Bail Bonds website, social media, scholarship announcements, marketing materials, and press releases.
By applying, applicants acknowledge and agree to this public use of their name and image if selected as the scholarship recipient.
