The Do’s & Don’ts of the Bail Process

The Do’s & Don’ts of the Bail Process

If a loved one or a friend needs your help to secure a bail bond, you may be the type of person who would do so without hesitation. However, bailing someone out is a huge responsibility since you must ensure the individual shows up to all court appearances. If your loved one or friend fails to appear, you could lose out on a lot of money or a significant amount of assets.

The following are things you should DO when bailing someone out of jail:

  • Do know the person you’re bailing out – While you wouldn’t bail out just about anybody from jail, you need to really know the person you’re bailing out since you are financially responsible for making sure he/she appears in court.
  • Do understand the agreement you’re making – You must fully understand the liabilities and responsibilities of posting bail. An experienced bail bondsman can answer any questions about what you’re agreeing to.
  • Do remain in contact with the person you bail out – Always check up on the individual to ensure he/she doesn’t avoid their court appearance or run away.

The following are things you should DO NOT when bailing someone out of jail:

  • Don’t bail out someone you have no personal connection with – You need to understand if the individual you’re bailing out won’t fail to appear or flee the state.
  • Don’t bail out someone without knowing the full price – Although paying more than 10 percent of the total bail is too expensive, paying less than 10 percent means the bondsman is cutting corners to lower the price.
  • Don’t lose touch with the person you bail out – If the person doesn’t appear or leaves the state, you lose money and/or assets.
